Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence with Foundation Year Undergraduate Courses

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree as long as this is your first Masters level qualification. This module is intended as a theoretical and methodological introduction to the most widely used and effective current techniques, strategies, and toolkits for natural language processing. This course includes project work that requires you to develop and produce a portfolio or collection. You’ll be expected to provide the materials for use in your individual major projects; costs will vary depending on the materials selected. These courses will provide you with the level of English needed to meet the conditions of your offer. As you progress through the course you will develop your skills to become a more independent learner.

You’ll graduate ready for a successful career in industry, having gained hands-on experience, practical, professional and technical skills. There may be instances when you will be required to submit work in a printed format. Printing, binding and photocopying costs are not included in your tuition fees, this may cost up to £100 per year. Our applied approach to teaching is supported by dedicated laboratories, including state-of-the-art facilities for rapid prototyping and manufacturing, a fully equipped materials laboratory, and a modern electronics and robotics lab. Our labs have recently been enhanced with the addition of robot and electronic equipment, providing students with access to the latest technologies and tools. The course team comprises highly-experienced staff members with extensive knowledge in both research and industry.

Our beautiful green campus offers a student-friendly setting in which to live and study, within easy reach of the action in the city centre. It’s easy to get around – everything is within walking or pedalling distance, or you can use the fast and frequent bus service. Our Interaction Labs provide excellent facilities for research and teaching in human-computer interaction. The Interaction Labs consist of an Accessibility and Usability Lab and a Games Research Lab, both of which are stocked with the latest technologies. Our modern, self-contained building houses four software laboratories, two hardware laboratories and a range of social learning spaces.

Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website. You’ll undertake an individual project under supervision, which should contain an element of original research. The project will be AI-application based (i.e. analysing, specifying, building and evaluating an AI-application or demonstrator, and forming recommendations and conclusions on the relative merits of the technologies involved and the methodologies used). The project will include production of developed code, supporting written documentation, and practical demonstration. The third year will enhance the knowledge of dynamics and system theory through the study simulation, control, dynamics and communications, which are crucial in the study of robotics.

In addition to these modules students will be enrolled on a pre-course induction programme in fundamental mathematics and programming. An important aim for this programme is to increase the number of people from groups currently underrepresented in the AI and Data Science fields, and to encourage graduates from diverse backgrounds to consider a future in these occupations. This module provides a foundational understanding of some important issues in information visualisation design. You will learn about the differences between scientific and creative approaches to constructing visualisations, and consider some important challenges such as the representation of ambiguous or time-based data. You will also learn about psychological theories that help explain how humans process information, and consider their relevance to the design of effective visualisations. They are employed in banking, production control and the stock market, as well as in scientific and engineering applications.
