Synopsis
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secret and ancient events, the selection of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church.. Harris’ 2016 Novel “Conclave”… Cardinal Benitez delivers his climactic speech in Spanish. It is a bit of a stretch to think that all the other cardinals easily understand him. This is a wrong assumption. All cardinals are fluent in standard Latin, and many speak Italian in other conversations in the film.

All of these languages belong to the Romance language family, so it is not difficult to assume that most cardinals have a basic understanding of Spanish. It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had a good old, serious, tense, “big” one; a dramatic film with big movie stars. Well, that’s exactly what director Edward Berger, fresh off the Oscar-winning film ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022), brings to his latest.
Ralph Fiennes gives what might be his best performance to date
Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) adapted Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, and the result is a welcome Oscar-worthy crowd pleaser. And that’s saying something for a highly regarded actor who previously excelled in films like SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), THE CONSTANT GARDNER (2005), IN BRUGES (2008), THE BIGGER LIST (2018). ), and MENU (2022). His impressive career has only been enhanced by this recent role as Cardinal Lawrence, charged with the difficult task of facilitating the titular Conclave tasked with electing a new Pope. At the beginning of the film, the beloved Pope has just passed by… and, as they say, “let the games begin.” Of course, all these games are political maneuvering, power struggles and behind-the-scenes promises.

Director Berger chooses to show us very little actual negotiation and instead lays out different iterations of loyalty during each successive secret ballot (of course). His time is mostly spent researching advice, berating others for their behavior, and dealing with the enormous egos of what he considers to be a few (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who claims he doesn’t want the job, while campaigning to be the “progressive” voice the church needs right now. John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most ambitious who willy-nilly undermines other people’s work. Cardinal Tedesco, played by Sergio Castellitto, is the most open about wanting the church to return to the old ways (Latin masses forever!), which he considers appropriate. Bryan F O’Byrne plays O’Malley, Lawrence’s assistant, and yet, despite all these men, Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes manages to (figuratively) shoot the fire out of her eye, thus keeping her “place”.

She is stunning and memorable in her limited role. The first big surprise comes in the form of Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz) of Kabul, recently appointed by the previous pope and unknown to others. As a novel, this can be a real page turner, yet the film never rushes from moment to moment.
