In multiple episodes, Jonathan uses the same lens throughout the series, a medium-telephoto
Synopsis
It follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a TV documentary journalist whose work relies on exposing the transgressions of long-respected institutions. Gary Oldman was originally rumored to be cast, but was replaced by Kevin Kline. Such a lens would not be able to focus on close-up objects like selfies with Sasha or in the bedroom with Catherine…
At its core, it’s a story of revenge
Darn! I had no idea what I was getting into when I started watching this AppleTV+ limited series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. “Exemption” is based on the novel of the same name by René Knight and was written for and directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Blanchett, as always, is fantastic here, and Klein also gives a solid performance
Blanchett plays Catherine, a journalist whose secrets from her past resurface in disturbing ways, forcing her to confront the past that is devastating her entire life. It was a masterfully told story that took us on a fascinating journey of discovery as the audience was shown (sometimes in vivid detail) the “events” from Catherine’s past. It was surprising to see Sacha Baron Cohen in a more serious role, but he did him justice.
But boy, am I glad I stuck around
Despite a few/some minor niggles, I highly recommend this series if you like character dramas with a little added tension/intrigue. Note: There are some pretty graphic images of sex/intimacy shown in various episodes. It’s not action packed and it took me about half an episode (about 30 minutes) before I was finally “caught”; onto the story.
