Beetlejuice: I think it was Dostoevsky who said
Synopsis
After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still obsessed with Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife. Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci talk about why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience they’ll never forget. Tim Burton has said that this film would only happen if Michael Keaton returned to reprise his role. Keaton said in March 2014 that this is the only sequel he’s interested in making. The film references “French physicist” Maria Sklodowska-Curie; is, in fact, one of the most famous Polish scientists in history, often considered second only to Copernicus..

Would it live up to expectations?
However, for the record, I completely understand Burton’s reasons for not including them. The always excellent Ortega, Dafoe, Theroux and Bellucci are also in it, although she is completely wasted here. Devito gives us a memorable cameo and Burn Gorman gives us a couple of scenes. Verdict Beetlejuice 2 is one of those sequels that people have been talking about for decades, including countless rumors, fake news and even fan-made trailers, but I never expected it to happen. When the trailer came out, it was official, undeniable and I was both excited and hesitant. You see, I am of that generation that saw the original film when it first came out and loved it, but 36 years later I got a sequel!
Would the characters hold up?
Well, the answer is very mixed. Over the course of three and a half decades the logical thing for it to do was play heavily on nostalgia, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice surprised me with how little it did that. Yes there are nods here and there, yes there are throwback scenes and yes there is a certain song that returns but for the most part they really are making a film here for a new generation who probably haven’t seen the original any more than Beetlejuice fans and I personally didn’t appreciate it and thought it was a puzzling choice. The next cast, Keaton as Beetlejuice didn’t give me the same feeling, I’m not sure if it was him or the script but he wasn’t the endearing character we’ve come to love and know from the 80s. Lydia? Ryder did her part and was fantastic, this was a great return.
well, she was there
O’Hara was very Delia again but remember Delia is a deeply annoying character right? So all this screen time compared to the original film was certainly not a good thing. Theroux was excellent, Ortega was brilliant, Dafoe was his usual crazy self and Bellucci was… You see, I love Bellucci, but in the end she was created as the antagonist of the film, she is barely on the screen, she contributes nothing and even the swan song of the characters is rushed and frankly terrible. You see, the plot is very tired and extremely generic, it needed that nostalgia, it needed Beetlejuice, it doesn’t have much of either. And when we do have the Beetlejuice scenes they are, very, very weak.
